I can't believe I told him that.

That was supposed to stay buried, secret, inside of me, for forever.

How humiliating... to tell a man that what you desire most, the best reward you can imagine is to sit at his heels like a well-loved hunting dog, petted and treated and praised for a good day's work?

Yet all he did was kiss me.

Just as I think we're turning right, he makes a hard left and suddenly we're driving off the beaten path and through wild grass and mud and holding on for dear life while he laughs like a madman and drives us to only God knows what - because I'm pretty certain neither of us do.

We discussed the boys' schooling, and we've picked out several nice schools ( with Byron's help ) and we'll soon broach the subject with them.

Lately though, I've been driven topside. I can't explain the restlessness in me. I know only that the earth is stirring, and that we are all huddled on the brink of something momentous - waiting to topple.

Harriett didn't have much to do, what with George retired now, save keep house, harass her children and grandchildren, nag the lazy lump who occupied her couch, and watch the world go by.

Of particular interest were the young couple which had inherited Bunraku Bill's old workshop and house. They never liked Bill, or his screechy wife with her ridiculous orange hair and loud bracelets, or their terrible collection of lawn gnomes and flamingos. Every other night saw the same feature - Bill and Screechy's Epic Fight Part 8,936, starring Broken Dishes and Loud Cries of 'Dammit, Woman'. Of course it was entertaining - it just didn't make them good neighbors.

Then they left in their beat-up old truck, laughing and kissing each other obscenely, like young people do, and that Aberly boy moved in. Real quiet, that one. Moody-like. Always frowning. Actually, that beetled brow and stubborn chin reminded her very much of George, when they'd both been young, before the war, before a family, before the mediocrity of work and empty nest syndrome and retirement. So she'd always been eager to get to know the Aberly boy, but he kept himself removed. The house stayed quiet, save for the workshop.

Then That Boy came.

He was like a dream, like an angel, like a fairy stepped from the woods, so pale and soft and meek and delicate and shy. She doted on him constantly, and oh, he was so nice and always willing to help... always bringing cookies and leftovers, so courteous, not at all like her own grandbrats... she didn't know what relationship he had with Quip, but she guessed they were close... very close.

Of course she hadn't seen him in some time... Rumors varied as to what had happened. All she noticed was that he didn't come around so much anymore... hardly ever went on his walks, or was to be heard running amuck in their backyard. It was a pity. That boy was like a ray of sunshine, so full of smiles and laughter.

Though now that Harriett raised her head, in the midst of sweeping, to sigh wistfully at the house down the lane, she thought she spied a wagging tail, and the gleam of white hair. She flapped her hand, and called out. "Iever! Is that you, dear...?"

Iever sat on the front porch, Rapunzel cuddled in his lap, gnawing at a thumb and haggardly watching the outside world he was now immersed in, if only on the fringes of it, the front door safely at his back.

He jumps when he's called and looks over his shoulder to where the elderly lady next-door is sweeping. Iever looks about, as if checking to make sure no one's watching, and then carefully puts his mopey puppy on the ground. He gets up and skittishly moves to the end of the landing, eyes darting everywhere, one arm nervously rubbing the other, shoulders hunched, everything about him tense and jump.

"Hi Mrs. Reen."
Vincent Valentinebeastunderneath on October 4th, 2008 02:45 pm (UTC)
Harriett frowns, looking down her nose through her glasses at him.

"Well come over and say hello, boy, it's been ages since I've gotten so much as a smile from you!" She holds out her arms, smiling widely, perfectly coiffed curls bouncing.
Iever Aberley-Valentine: Ieverlem0n_pie on October 4th, 2008 02:48 pm (UTC)
Iever makes a pained face. His hand squeezes his arm so tightly his knuckles go white. He looks back and forth, as if excepting flying dragons to attack any moment. He steps forward and then ducks back, shaking his head.

"I... I can't, I'm sorry. I'm sorry... I can't leave, the um, the house."
Vincent Valentinebeastunderneath on October 4th, 2008 03:25 pm (UTC)
Her frown deepens. "Oh? And why's that? Coming down with something...?"
Iever Aberley-Valentine: Ieverlem0n_pie on October 4th, 2008 03:29 pm (UTC)
Iever shakes his head, still skittish, distracted. "Uh-uh, I um... the house. I don't have the key, so, um, I don't want to leave it unwatched, you know..." he smiles weakly, apologetic.

He looks away, scanning the street as people walked by, keeping an eye out for Quip and... anything threatening.

Quip had gone out to get some supplies. After his brave walk to Cid's house, Iever was still determined to get over his fear of the outdoors. He had thought waiting outside rather than in the house would be good practice. But he was doubting his logic with each passing minute, feeling the weight of the wide, open world bear down on him.
Vincent Valentinebeastunderneath on October 4th, 2008 03:32 pm (UTC)
"You don't have a key?" She asks incredulously.
Iever Aberley-Valentine: Ieverlem0n_pie on October 4th, 2008 03:35 pm (UTC)
"I do, I just, um," Iever fumbles, too distracted by everything to properly come up with the right excuses. "I left it in Quip's jacket. Um... How are you?" He asks, trying to change the subject.
Vincent Valentinebeastunderneath on October 4th, 2008 03:40 pm (UTC)
She hums, frowning worriedly. "We're fine dear, fine. Our daughter will be coming in, soon, our youngest..." She trails off, nervously handling her broom. "Are you sure you don't want to come over here, dear? I can fix us some hot chocolate, just like you like, and you can keep an eye on the house!"
Iever Aberley-Valentine: Ieverlem0n_pie on October 4th, 2008 03:44 pm (UTC)
Iever swallows stickly, and shakes his head, backing up a few steps. "No, no, thank you, sorry. I'm waiting for Quip, he'll, he'll be back real soon," he says firmly, certainly, as if holding up that tid-bit like a shield.
Vincent Valentinebeastunderneath on October 4th, 2008 03:50 pm (UTC)
"Where is Quip? You two are nigh inseparable!"
Iever Aberley-Valentine: Ieverlem0n_pie on October 4th, 2008 03:58 pm (UTC)
"He's getting some groceries," Iever says, rubbing his arm compulsively. "He'll be back real soon, any minute now..."
Vincent Valentinebeastunderneath on October 4th, 2008 04:02 pm (UTC)
"Do you want me to come over and keep you company, dear? It's been ages!"
Iever Aberley-Valentine: Ieverlem0n_pie on October 4th, 2008 04:07 pm (UTC)
Iever hesitates, considering it. The company would certainly be welcome.... But god, what kind of man would he be if he huddled behind an old lady? And if anything actually happened...? He already had Dog's blood on his hands....

Iever shakes his head, giving Harriet a week smile. "I'm sorry, Quip will be back soon. I have to... do this by myself. I'm sorry."
Vincent Valentinebeastunderneath on October 4th, 2008 04:15 pm (UTC)
She cocks her head uncertainly, but doesn't press her point. "Well... all right... but if you get the chance, do come over! George and I miss you, isn't that right George?"

"Yeah, yeah," comes George's muffled reply, from over the TV in the living room.
Iever Aberley-Valentine: Ieverlem0n_pie on October 4th, 2008 04:19 pm (UTC)
"Okay, thank you," Iever says, fussing at his sleeve-cuffs. "I'll try and be over real soon, as soon as I can, you'll see." He smiles, and it sounds like a promise.

Just as Harriett turns to wave and dismiss herself, Rapunzel's lazy woof alerts her to a figure heading up the road towards them, ponytailed head-down, clad in a brown leather jacket and laden with plastic grocery bags.

Iever looks up, his heart bursting with something he couldn't even describe.

Quip had come home.

And he'd managed to wait outside the entire time.

Iever hesitates, hopping from foot to foot, before throwing caution to the wind and runs out on the street, throwing himself at Quip and hugging him hard where the metal-worker was defenseless to protect himself, arms full of groceries.

"I missed you," Iever mumbles happily against Quip's chest.

"What the-" Quip yelps, as Iever tackles him, catching him completely unawares. "What th'Hell're y'doin' out the house, idiot?" He bellows, frowning darkly.
Iever Aberley-Valentine: Photo like Melem0n_pie on October 4th, 2008 04:42 pm (UTC)
"I love it when you sweet-talk me," Iever jokes, nuzzling against his boyfriend. "I was waiting for you on the porch. The whole time."
belong_to_boo on October 4th, 2008 04:46 pm (UTC)
Quip's eyes widen, and he drops the groceries, putting his arms carefully about Iever. "Holy shit, really? Boo, do y'have any idea how long I've been gone? HO-LEE SHIT!"

Harriett startles at Quip's enthusiastic cursing, stiffening. Such a shame. Such a good upbringing, too. She watches the scene unfold.

Quip sweeps Iever up, hugging him hard. "An hour an' a half, Boo! AN HOUR AN' A HALF!"
Iever Aberley-Valentine: Ieverlem0n_pie on October 4th, 2008 04:50 pm (UTC)
"Is that all? It felt longer," Iever says, his voice smaller this time, letting out his relief and anxieties. He lets Quip hold him, hugging him back, letting all the responsibility fall into Quip's strong, warm hands. "Let's go inside. I'll cook you anything you want."
belong_to_boo on October 4th, 2008 04:54 pm (UTC)
"Yeah, that's right ye will," he growls, slapping Iever on the ass. "Now pick up those groceries and march, soldier," he says with a devious grin. "I'll follow along behind." He stands back, arms folded, eyes fixed on Iever, their glint playful.

Harriett's eyes widen behind her spectacles, eyebrows rising.
Iever Aberley-Valentine: Photo like Melem0n_pie on October 4th, 2008 05:23 pm (UTC)
Iever blushes and throws Iever a smile and a coy look. He picks up the bag and coos at Rapunzel to follow them inside the house, biting his lip self-consciously as he goes.

Quip raises an eyebrow, standing akimbo, watching Iever precede him into the house appreciatively.

Harriett's look of surprise changes to a frown of disapproval. That poor boy, sitting out on the porch for over an hour - only to be commanded like a servant and marched inside! And that smug look of superiority on the Aberly boy's face...!

Quip glances at Harriett, grinning lopsidedly at her, and giving her a sharp little salute. She smiled woodenly at him, waving. Just what was going on with her neighbors...?
